‘Ayoade on Ayoade: a cinematic odyssey’
Every once in a while, I feel a need to shake up the reading material I select. Feeling like a break from the usual fiction I read, I decided to give this a try.
The book is written by actor and director Richard Ayoade and is basically one big in-joke, poking fun at the film industry and self-obsessed nature of those within the industry.
There were definitely laugh-out-loud moments in this book, although it helps if you can picture Ayoade saying the words himself in his own unique style. However, I can’t help but feel that for a book that is a parody, 300 pages is a little too long, and the flipping back and forth between numerous footnotes and appendices began to annoy me a little after a while.
Overall, enjoyable, but not a book I would recommend to everyone. My own limited knowledge of the world of cinema limited my engagement with the text and I think you need to have a good knowledge of both the film world and the author to get the most out of this book.
